What is an Attribute in HTML?

HTML attributes basically provide additional information about HTML elements. These attributes are placed within the opening tag of an element and are used to modify the element's behavior.

 Attributes are generally  composed of a name and a value, separated by an equal sign (=), and are enclosed in double quotes (").

Example of HTML Attribute:

Now, let us understand the difference between attributes and tags in a better way with the help of an example. <img src="image.jpg" alt="Image Description"> Here in the above example, <img> is a tag used to display images, whereas if we talk about <src>, it is an HTML attribute specifying the information about image source file. While the <alt> attribute is providing an alternative text for that particular image. These attributes are providing additional information about <img> element. 2. <a href="https://www.xyz.com"> “for more clarification click here”  </a> Here, <a> tag is an element containing content and <href> is an attribute containing hyperlinks within the text. 3.  <p style="color:blue;">    This is a blue paragraph.      </p> Here, <p> tag is an element containing a paragraph and <style> tag is an attribute used to add styles to the element.  These style attributes include: Color, Font size and much more things.

Why are HTML attributes necessary ?

  • Attributes like <alt> in <img> tags  provide text descriptions for images, which are essential for screen readers and it also makes a webpage user friendly.
  • Attributes such as <href> in <a> tags define hyperlinks within the text, allowing users to navigate between web pages seamlessly.
  • Using HTML attributes in a web page makes the page more interactive and user friendly attracting more users.
  • Attributes are used for adding styles in the text which makes the web page more attractive.
