How Do I Get Hired As UI/UX Designer With No Experience?

Last year I got hired as a UI/UX designer in a Noida-based, even before choosing the offer I had multiple offers in my hand.

Few months before getting a job, I had no expectations of getting hired as a UI/UX designer as I don’t have any prior experience or degree in this relevant field.

What Do Ui/Ux Designers Do?

UI/UX designer stands for User Interface and User Experience designers, they both are responsible for creating visually appealing and functional products for users.

UI designers are responsible for designing the look and feel of a digital product. They work on elements like color schemes, buttons, icons, and layout, their main aim is to create a pleasing and consistent design that aligns with the brand’s identity.

UX designers, on the other hand, focus on the overall user experience. They conduct research to understand user needs, behaviors, and pain points, then use this information to create prototypes, and user flows. Their goal is to ensure that the product is user-friendly, easy to use and meets the users’ expectations.

Now we will talk about certain things that helped me in getting hired as a UI/UX designer.

Learn Fundamentals

Before starting with anything else, it is important to learn the fundamentals of UI/UX design starting from the UI/UX design and basics of any UI-focused design software. Like if I tell mine I have started with the basics of Figma software.

You can learn these fundamentals of UI/UX design for free from YouTube or refer to any paid courses for better understanding of all the concepts. Paid courses often provide course completion certificates, which will help you build your resume.

Create Dummy Ui/Ux Case Studies

As I have told you above, I have no experience in UI/UX Designer, apart from this I also don’t have any real projects to showcase in my resume.

This is when I came up with the idea of creating a dummy project that helped me get a job as a UI/UX designer.

I have redesigned the website of Flipkart, making it more interactive and user-friendly.

E-commerce Website Redesign: You can redesign the UI/UX of a popular e-commerce platform like Amazon, or Flipkart. Focus on improving the user journey, simplifying the checkout process, and enhancing product discovery by engaging new and interactive visuals.
Mobile App for Fitness Tracking: Design a mobile app that allows users to track their fitness goals, workouts, and progress. Include features like goal setting, workout plans, progress graphs, and a social community for sharing achievements. You can take reference from popular fitness apps like the Adidas running app etc.
Travel Planning Platform: Create a web-based platform for planning and booking travel experiences. Design an interactive interface for browsing destinations, selecting travel dates, comparing prices, and managing bookings. include user-friendly filters, maps, and recommendations for a better user experience.
Recipe Sharing App: Develop a mobile app where users can discover, save, and share recipes. Design a simplified and visually appealing popular platforms like Behnace or Dribble.

Make A Personal Website

Having a personal website will help you to stand out in the recruiter’s eye. Having your personal website, helps you to showcase your design style and creativity on it. It also helps recruiters to go through your work and creativity by just opening your website.

For starting a website, all you need to do is buy a domain with your full name or something unique that creatively defines you. Include all your dummy projects and resumes on your website in a creative way.

For creating a personal website, you can use any no-code platform like Webflow, Wix, Framer, etc.

Start With Freelancing

Every college student wants to have some side income in his college days, but getting an internship is not that easy as they prefer experience and a relevant degree.

Don’t worry I will introduce you today to the world of Freelancing, freelancing will help you to polish your skills and learn new things related, while even getting paid for it. Freelancing enables you to work on your time, being your own boss.

Having freelancing skills will surely add to your resume, helping you in getting your desired UI/UX designer Job.

How Can You Start Freelancing?

1. Identify Your Skills: Determine what services you can offer as a freelancer.
2. Build a Portfolio: Create a portfolio showcasing your best work. Include case studies, client testimonials, and examples that demonstrate your skills and expertise. This will help you to attract clients.
3. Set Your Rates: if you are a new bee to freelancing, I would recommend you to set minimum rates as it will help you to attract more clients in the beginning.

Register on Platforms: You can register on platforms like Behance, Dribble, Upwork, and much more.

Do Personal Branding

Personal branding refers to the process of creating a unique identity and reputation for yourself as a professional within your industry. It involves showcasing your skills, expertise, and personality in a way that truly attracts your target audience.

Doing personal branding helps in building your own audience as well as making a stand that you are someone who is constantly learning & growing in the field of UI/UX designer.

Apply Everywhere

Now after building all your profiles and portfolios, it is time to apply for a job. You can’t expect to apply at two places and get a positive reply from them. So all you need to do is apply everywhere on different platforms.

These platforms include Instahyre, Angellist, LinkedIn, Naukri.com, and much more. Keep in mind to build your profile interactive and creative on these platforms too, as it helps you to stand out in from of the recruiter.
